Our San Diego's Pacific Rocky Shores Trip (San Diego Bird Festival) took us to the La Jolla area along Coast Boulevard on Friday, March 6, 2009. This Double-crested Cormorant was sitting on the rocks below us. The Double-crested Cormorant we photographed is a western breeding adult that is sporting two white tuffs on either side of its head extending behind its eyes (tuffs are black and less conspicuous in eastern birds). The eyes and inside of this bird's mouth are a bright turquoise demonstrating just how beautiful and intriguing this species is. It was a partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the mid- to high 60's.
